Background History

The school has a rich heritage

Today, the school continues to honor its legacy by preparing future generations for success in an ever-changing world.

01

Historical Background

In 1981 the community teamed up with well-wishers to construct the school. It was named after the then Prime Minister of the Republic of Zimbabwe, His Excellency R. G. Mugabe as Robert Gabriel Mugabe Primary School, in recognition of the sterling job done during the liberation struggle of Zimbabwe. The school first opened its doors to nearly four hundred pupils in January 1982 and was officially opened in February by His Excellency, the then Prime Minister of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Comrade R G Mugabe.

R.G. Mugabe Primary School had a humble beginning when it opened its doors to pupils in 1982. It had a fairly good administration block, two/three-class roomed blocks and a very small toilet with squat holes as its infrastructure for use. A cabin was built and was used as a store room. The school did not build infrastructure from 1982 to 1992.

Responsible Authority

In the early days of the school’s existence; (1982-1988) – the school was run by a board of Governors, which was also said to be the responsible authority. The board was responsible for raising funds in order to continue developing the infrastructure of the school. During this era, it is said disco equipment was donated by a well-wisher to be used as part of fund raising among other fund raising activities. Today the school is run by the Schools’ Development Committee, tasked with developmental projects and raising funds for such.

Infrastructural Development

It is paramount to bring to the fore that from 1993 the school authorities deliberately adopted radical developmental activities in the school. The parents and other stakeholders were galvanized to assist the school authorities in establishing and implementing developmental plans for the betterment of the institution. The SDC at that time managed to construct additional classroom blocks and a modern ablution facility for learners. The construction of the ablution facility commenced third term of 1993 and was completed by mid-1994. It is significant to appreciate the donation extended to the school by Mrs. Van Bunigan. Her donation played a pivotal role in the building of the ablution facility.

Following the completion of the construction of the ablution facility, the school authorities embarked, from 1995 to 2005, on the construction of two classroom blocks, dura wall and a tennis court.

In 2011 the SDC built an Early Childhood Education (ECD) play centre and this was completed in 2012. The play centre at that time was the best in the whole of Mashonaland East Province. The play centre was officially opened by the then Minister and now Senator, Honorable S. Sekeramayi. In 2012, the SDC bought a school truck. The period from 2013-2015 saw the school constructing additional classroom blocks for the infant classes.

In 2016, the school authorities revamped all the furniture in every classroom by buying new furniture. In addition, the school managed to purchase a school bus with funds mobilized from the year 2015.

In 2013, the school was among schools chosen by the Marondera Municipality to have bore holes. The Chinese Government was donating such projects to various Institutions in the country. The borehole, having been sunk, the school then bought a big tank, a booster pump and pipes for water network. To date the school is supplied with piped borehole water and the community is also benefiting from the school’s water source. The SDC managed to drill three additional boreholes for the school. This was necessary in order to accommodate the growing demand for clean water by the school. The water is currently being exploited for agricultural activities, cleaning toilets and drinking.

It is critical to mention that from 2016 the school authorities, through the SDC, was able to modernize major infrastructure in the school. The school drive way and other pathways were paved. The ablution facility and classrooms were tiled. In addition, the school embarked on fish farming, poultry and horticultural projects.
